Floral tattoo on upper back

Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman in a white crop top bends forward on a blue yoga mat, with her back and a black and grey flower tattoo facing the camera. The tattoo sits between the shoulder blades and shows a stylised bloom with petals, fine outlines and soft shading. The plain white wall and light floor keep the focus on the tattoo and the pose.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The gardener's daughter on the island of Skerra had never once been allowed past the sea wall, and so when the spring tide brought a bloom up the shingle, wrapped in weed and salt, she knew it was not hers to keep. It had five petals opened wide and a heart of fine dark threads, and it smelled of cold rain and something sweeter underneath. Her mother said it was a sea-lily from the deep grounds where the old boats sank. Her father said nothing and planted it in a pot by the door.

All that summer it grew toward the wall. It put down roots through the cracks in the mortar and climbed the stones one petal at a time, until the villagers stopped stepping around it and started bringing it water in their cupped hands. The fishermen said it bent their way when they were out past the rocks. The priest said it did no harm. The girl said nothing at all, because she had learned from her father that a thing that grows toward you is not always grown for you.

In autumn the boats came back short of men, and the flower opened one last time, pale as a cut shell. The girl went down to the shingle with a knife and cut its stem at the root. She carried it up to the wall and set it on the highest stone, facing the water. Nobody stopped her. By morning the petals had gone to lace, and the sea had taken them, and the wall was only a wall again.
