Inverted woman with rose and fruit leg tattoos

Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A woman with red hair is upside down in a yoga pose, supported on her forearms on a purple mat, with her legs raised and straight. Her legs and upper body are covered in bold, coloured tattoos, including large red roses, a strawberry or similar fruit on the thigh, and green leaves, with dark outlines. The indoor setting has a plain wall, wooden floor and a patterned rug, and the framing centres on the inverted figure.

Dear Nell, the lock at Cowley has eaten another of Dad's brass rings, so you'll have to take my word that the Marigold is still afloat. We came through Bulbourne on Tuesday with the cabin roof streaked with rain and the strawberry pots lashed on the front deck, which Mum says is the only sensible place for them since the cats have decided the towpath is theirs. Three ripe ones are sitting in a saucer on the table now, dark as cherries and bruised where Tom sat on them.

I spent the afternoon repainting the roses on the cabin side. Dad taught me the old way, a fat brush for the petals, red lead thinned with linseed, and the leaves done in two greens so they look like they're turning over in a breeze. The lady at the chandlery said nobody paints roses any more, that it's all vinyl stickers now, and I told her she could keep her stickers. The paint took its time drying. I kept thinking of what he said when he finished the last boat: a rose on a boat is a promise that someone aboard will come home.

Tomorrow we reach the top lock. Mum wants the strawberries eaten before we get there, so I've put one aside for you, wrapped in greaseproof, in the tin under the bunk. It will be squashed by the time you read this. Eat it anyway, and think of the Marigold going slowly uphill, with the water rising under us like it has somewhere to be.

Love, Jo
