Zentangle star design with hearts
Geometric · Mixed · Flash
A faceted star sits at the centre of a rectangular frame drawn in black ink on paper. Its points are filled with orange and yellow zentangle-style swirls and dotted outlines, with a smaller star layered in the middle. The background is a field of small outlined hearts and triangles washed with purple watercolour, bordered by a row of dots.

The ink had gone thick in the cold, so Nell Hobbs held the pen in her teeth while she warmed the bottle against her coat. Outside the cottage the forest at Hollin's End pressed its black trunks right up to the last hedge, and every evening the children dared each other to touch the first oak. Nell had stopped daring anything at eleven. She drew instead.

Her grandmother's rule was simple: one star for every person who had gone past the oaks and come back. Nell had drawn nine on the kitchen wall in charcoal, each one packed with dots and little combed swirls, each with hearts hidden in the corners where the paint could not reach. Tonight the tenth lay on the table under the lamp, its purple wash still soft at the edges, the frame ruled and dotted round it like a row of pearls.
Tom Greaves came in stamping snow off his boots, his lantern dark. He had been to the oaks and not come back at dusk. He had come back at midnight, which was not the same thing, and he would not say what he had seen in between. He looked at the paper for a long time. "You've made it gold," he said. "You never make anything gold." Nell dipped her brush in the orange and filled the left point slowly, swirl by swirl, until the star glowed like a window.
When the ink was dry she pinned it above the door, facing the trees, and went to bed. In the morning the hearts in the background had been drawn on the wrong side of the frame, Tom's boots were gone from the mat, and the lamp on the step had been lit from inside, which was not how she had left it. She took the star down, blew the dust off the dots, and began the eleventh.
