Zombie, biohazard and crossbow flash sheet
Black and grey · Flash
A sheet of repeated black tattoo flash designs arranged in neat rows on a white background. The motifs include biohazard symbols, a crossbow, solid zombie silhouettes, a sheriff hat with a star badge, a spiky sunburst, small pom-pom figures, curved abstract shapes and outlined eyeglasses. The solid silhouettes and filled symbols contrast with the thin outlines of the glasses and the sunburst, and there is no colour.

The bolts were the last thing Wendell counted every night, lining them up on the sill of the Co-op storeroom like the teeth of a comb. Forty-one. He said the number aloud the way his mother used to say the rosary, and after the first week I stopped pretending I was listening. The hat was Sergeant Pryce's. He had stopped wearing it when the radio went quiet, and it sat on the hook by the door with its star badge catching the light from the window. Mrs Ilett from the chip shop wanted it for the Sunday pageant, and nobody had the heart to tell her the pageant had been cancelled along with everything else. She came down the high street that Friday wearing a fringe of pom-poms, shaking them at the bank wall as though it might cheer up, and the lads on the roof stopped work to watch her.

We went out at dawn to clear the ring road. Wendell fired the first bolt into the petrol station forecourt and missed the figure shuffling towards the pumps, and then he laughed, a proper laugh, the first I had heard from him since Tuesday. The sun came up behind the church spire in a hard white burst, all spokes and no warmth, and for a minute the whole valley looked like a sticker on a school exercise book.
I am writing this on the back of the rota because the notebook is in the car. If you find it, the bolts are in the storeroom and the hat is on the hook. Tell Wendell he can keep the crossbow. I am keeping the glasses, because they are the only thing left in this town that still lets me see the road properly.
