Four infinity symbol designs with varied motifs

Black and grey · Flash

A white background shows four stacked infinity symbols drawn in black line with tapered, varying stroke weight. Each symbol ends on the right with a different motif: a cluster of butterflies breaking apart, a flock of birds, a musical note beside the word music in script, and three small outlined hearts. The designs are monochrome and evenly spaced down the page, with plenty of white space around them.

The Ashby show had gone round the same figure of eight for thirty winters, out past the mill and back by the chalk pit, and by the autumn of the bad year the loop had grown shorter than the animals could bear. Mrs Ada Pell kept the books in a tin under the driving seat. There was one tiger left, a big top with three holes in its roof, and a boy called Jem who swept sawdust into piles that the wind took back.

Each evening before the last date the butterflies came off the hedgerows, thousands of them, pale as ash, and settled on the guide ropes. Nobody in the company had seen them so thick. Jem stood on a bale of hay with the cornet player's mute in his pocket and watched them lift in the dusk and break apart over the field like a torn handkerchief. Ada said it was a sign the season had turned. Her husband had said the same about the rain.

The birds came next, starlings first and then a long dark flock that wheeled above the wagons without landing. The fiddler, a deaf man named Ezra Vane, played them down with one slow tune and watched their shadows while he played. When the tune ended the sky was empty. They packed the last lamps and drove the figure of eight once more, and at the chalk pit the cornet started a note nobody had asked for.

At the bottom of the loop the wagons stopped. Jem climbed down and found, pressed into the wet grass, three small hearts drawn by a child's finger in the mud, and beside them a torn scrap of paper with the word music written in pencil. Ada folded it into the tin with the takings. They had nothing else left to sell, so they kept it.
