Pin-up woman with swallows on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A pin-up woman in a blue star-patterned swimsuit and red stockings is shown in a reclining pose, with a bow in her hair and a swallow near her face. Two more swallows and dotted flight lines surround her, drawn in bold black outlines. Solid flat colour in red, blue, yellow and skin tones sits against the arm on a white paper backdrop.

The swallows came back to the yard the same week the phone at the back of the shop stopped ringing for Dolly. I was in by half three, the ovens ticking as they warmed, and I heard them before I saw them: that thin wet chatter over the bins, where they had built their mud nests under the flue vent. Mrs Okafor's son had painted the girl on the back door in July, a pin-up in a star-spangled swimsuit with one red-stockinged leg kicked up, and my father said it would bring the wrong sort of customer. It brought the swallows instead.

Dolly was what my mother called the white cob she baked on Fridays, before the lorry came. Nobody in Margate believed she had ever been a showgirl, but the photograph behind the till said she had, with two little birds in biro in the corner like a signature. I worked the dough on the long steel bench while the dark drained off the window, and I counted the birds sweeping in low over the flour sacks, always the same looping route past the paper bag rack, as if someone had drawn it for them with a dotted line.
On the Thursday the swallows went quiet. I found one on the step, wings folded, its forked tail no longer than my little finger. I carried it in on a tea towel and set it in the warmth beside the proving cupboard, and I watched the clock until the sky turned the colour of weak milk. When the first van pulled in I went out with the tray of cobs still steaming and left the back door propped open, so the others could find their way out.
