The yard in Grimsby finally finished the hull, so the boat goes out on Monday. Dad would have grumbled about the new paint on the wheelhouse, but he'd have liked the numbers. Ray had the signwriter copy the old stencil exactly, those black gothic figures that look cut from a hymn book. 1988 on the bow, bold as a sermon. I stood in the drizzle and watched him do the last eight, and I thought of the year you two bought her off the Hartley brothers for less than the engine was worth.

Nobody in the fleet believes the boat is lucky. Ray says luck is something you stop needing once the nets come up heavy, and he says it with his palm flat on the rail, the way Dad used to. I told him the numbers should be the first thing the gulls see when they lift off the harbour wall, so they know whose water this is.

I'm sending the old brass plate from the wheelhouse. Keep it in the drawer with the tide tables. I'll be home Thursday with fish for Sunday dinner, and you can tell me whether Dad's name still reads right under the new coat.
