Heart Hope lettering on a lower leg

Lettering · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A close shot of a lower leg showing the words HEART HOPE in bold, black, upright block capitals, set on one line across the leg. The lettering is crisp and solid with even linework, and the tattoo is the clear focus against lightly tanned skin. Plain pavement, white trainers and strong sunlight fill the rest of the frame.

The baker's boy had cut the two words into a slab of beech before the frost came, letter by letter, because his mother said a loaf should carry something when it left the door. Nobody in Haddon Row could read the marks backwards the way he had carved them, so Mrs Pell took the board down from its nail and pressed it into the first batch of the morning.

Every night the oven was lit at three, and every morning the bread came out with HEART HOPE stamped on its crust in plain upright capitals. The carters took it out to the mills. The schoolmaster ate his crusts first and said nothing. The bakery was no grand place, only a low brick room with a cracked step, and the people who came for the loaves had their own reasons for being up in the dark.

Then the winter the river rose, the flour barge went down at the weir and nobody came for a fortnight. Mrs Pell kept baking anyway, pressing the board into dough no one would buy, and the bread piled on the sill until the sparrows fought over it. On the fifteenth morning a boy in wet boots knocked on the glass and asked what the words meant. She told him to take a loaf and find out. He ate it walking home, and by the next dawn there was a queue down to the bridge.

Mrs Pell never said what the words meant. She kept the oven lit at three, the board on its nail, and waited for the knock.
