Small wing tattoo on ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small, single wing outline is tattooed on the side of an ankle, shown above a white leather sneaker and below the hem of light trousers. The linework is thin and dark, with minimal shading and the wing shape kept simple. The photograph is black and white, with the ankle and shoe filling most of the frame against a dark wooden surface.

14th October. Moored above the bottom lock at Hatchford, the water so still it holds the footbridge upside down. Dad says the swallows left a fortnight ago, but one stayed on the cabin roof, too stubborn or too hurt to follow the others south. I fed it crumbs from the seed cake and it let me stroke its back once, quick as a match struck and gone.

On the third morning it was gone too, and in its place on the tiller lay a single wing, folded, the tips darker than the rest, as if someone had laid a fan of shadow there to be found. Dad called it a sign. I called it a mess and then felt bad for calling it anything. I wrapped it in a tea towel and put it in the biscuit tin with the spare fuses and Mum's letters, the lid still saying KEEP in her careful capitals.
Tonight the lock keeper rowed out in his little dinghy to ask whether we'd seen a bird with a bad wing. I said no. I didn't tell him it had left me the part it could spare, or that the feather stirs in the tin whenever a barge goes by too fast and the wash rocks the cupboard.
Tomorrow we take the Hatchford flight with me on the tiller. Dad says I've got his steady hands. I suspect I've got something of the wing's too, the bit that still lifts when the wind comes off the stubble fields and tries to take the boat along with it.
