Gerald had the measuring wheel in one hand and a flask of stewed tea in the other, and the Embankment was empty except for a heron that refused to move for him. Every few hundred paces he stopped to read the counter, a tidy little dial whose numbers rolled over like a fruit machine that had given up on fortune. He had been walking the route since five. The council wanted it certified, the sort of paperwork nobody reads until a stranger's hip gives way somewhere near Constitution Hill.

He reached the far end of the Mall at twenty past nine, flicked the counter back to zero, then walked the whole thing again because the first reading had a wobble in it he didn't trust. Pigeons watched him do it. A man in a yellow tabard asked whether he was lost, and Gerald said no, he was only checking whether a thing could be true twice.
The second reading matched the first. Twenty-six miles and a fraction more, which was the figure the old club men had argued over for a century, and which nobody had ever thought to write down properly. Gerald filled in the form in biro, pressing hard enough to dent the card, and sat on a bollard while the light came up over the water.
The heron finally stepped down from the railing and settled beside him, both of them looking at the river as if it owed them an explanation for the distance.
