Matching infinity ankle tattoos with birds
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Three people's ankles are shown side by side, each with a matching black infinity symbol tattoo. Small bird silhouettes sit on the left loop, and a short script word is written inside the right loop. The linework is thin and solid black, with no shading or colour, against bare skin and a dark floor.

Shift your backside off that crate, because the swallows are the bit you came for. Ada Pryce kept the lost property hatch above the bus station in Hexley, which in 1956 meant wet umbrellas, one set of false teeth and a brass cornet nobody ever claimed. On a drizzling Tuesday three sisters came up the stairs asking after a string bag with a loaf in it. Ada, being Ada, asked what else they'd lost. The eldest looked at her shoes and said, 'Each other, near enough, since our Dad went off to Canada.'

Ada didn't believe in sentiment, but she believed in paper. She took a sheet of blotting paper from the drawer and drew a figure of eight lying on its side, the sign for forever, the kind of thing you see on a tin of toffee. On the left loop she put three swallows, because the youngest could whistle them out of the hedge at dusk. On the right loop the eldest wrote one word in her careful schoolgirl hand: HOME. The middle sister just tapped the paper and said, 'That's us, that is. Going round and round and never getting off.'
They had it inked the following Saturday at a booth on the pier, three ankles in a row, the same loop on each, the same little birds flying the same way. Ada found the string bag two weeks later, tucked behind the cornet, the loaf still in it and gone hard as a brick. She never did learn how it got there. She only knows the sisters came back for it in the spring, and when the eldest tugged her sleeve to thank her, she pointed at the stairs and said, 'Mind the step, love, it's the one that always brings you back.'
