Shaded wing tattoo on a lower leg

Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo

A single feathered wing is tattooed on the outer lower leg, starting near the ankle and sweeping upwards. The feathers are rendered with fine shading, highlights and soft gradients to give a three-dimensional look. The ink uses brown and reddish tones on the skin, with the wing set against a wooden floor and a yellow and black trainer.

Dear Tom, the wing came down the cut on Tuesday, caught in the weed by lock nine, and I fished it out with the boathook before Dad could tell me to leave it. It is a kestrel's, or near enough, rust-brown at the coverts and barred darker towards the tip, and it still smells of the reeds. I have pinned it above the stove where the steam can get at it. Mum would have said it was bad luck to bring feathers aboard. She said most things were bad luck, so I have stopped listening.

The barge is quieter since you went. Dad sleeps with the hatch open now, and in the mornings the water is so still under the bows that the sky sits in it upside down, grey and then gold as the sun gets up over the chimneys at Stoke. I walk the towpath to the shop each day and count the herons. There are six on the weir, but the big grey one stands apart and doesn't move for anybody, not even the lock keeper's dog.

Last Thursday I rowed the dinghy out past the moorings to fetch the spare fender from the Iris, and the wind got under my coat and nearly took me into the middle of the canal. I thought of the feather then, how it had hung on the weed without tearing. I held the oars steady and let the wind push, and it carried me straight to the landing stage.

Come up at Easter if you can. I'll show you the feather and the heron, and we can sit on the roof and not say very much. The kettle is always on. Love, Jess
