Three small running figure ankle tattoos
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Three pairs of legs in running trainers stand on a dark road surface, each ankle showing a small black tattoo of a running figure. The figures are simple, thin outlines with no shading, sitting near the ankle bone. The image is in natural daylight with warm skin tones and bright shoes in pink, green and blue, so the ink reads as black and grey against the skin.

Dear Nell, I found the stencil in the glovebox of Dad's old Transit, folded inside a Greggs bag, the little figure drawn in biro with one leg kicked out behind him as if he'd just spotted the bus pulling away. Dad must have done it the winter he taught us to pace the canal towpath by streetlight, when the lock keepers had gone home and the water looked like poured tar. Forty-one bridges from Skipton to the bottom gate, and he never once let us walk any of them.

I took the stencil to a parlour on Kirkgate yesterday, the one with the swallow on the shutter. The lad behind the counter said it looked like something a child would scratch onto a bus window, and I said that was rather the point. He traced it, inked it no bigger than a fingernail, and asked who it was for. I didn't have an answer that would fit in a chair, so I said the three of us.
Saturday we're meeting at the lock at half five, laces double-knotted, the sky still grey over the mill chimneys. Priya has already sent a photo of hers, pink trainers planted on the tarmac, and says she'll only believe the figure is hers once she's seen it run past the first bridge. Tell Dad we're counting, and tell him I'm not walking. Love, Jo.
