Mother Ysolde kept the tally on the back wall of the salt-house, where the sea wind came through the cracks and made the chalk lines shiver. Each evening she made one mark for every minute the village had been given, and each evening the count grew smaller, because the Long Grey had taken another stretch of the coast and the wells had gone brackish. When the last mark was made, the year was spent, and whoever held the chalk had to decide what the village would do with the next one.

Her grandson Tobiah came in one night with mud to his knees and asked why she counted minutes when the bells already rang the hours. She told him the hours were for the bells. Minutes were for people who needed to know exactly how much of a thing they had left.

He did not believe her, so she set him a task. He was to count out one year, five hundred and twenty-five thousand, six hundred pebbles, one for each minute, and say nothing until he was finished. He sat on the flagstones while the lamp burned down. By midnight he had reached a hundred, and he stopped, because the pile still looked like a mountain and his hands hurt.

His grandmother took the pebbles from his lap and laid them in a line along the wall, out through the door and across the yard. In the morning he went out in his bare feet and found the line still there, the wind having left it alone. He picked up the next pebble, then the one after that.
