Stylised sitting cat with curled tail
Black and grey · Photo
A bold black outline of a cat sitting upright, facing left, with a small detail for the eye and a long tail curling up and over on the right. The linework is thick and solid with open areas of unshaded skin inside the silhouette. The image shows only black ink on pale skin, with no other colours and a plain background.

Dear Tom,

Mags came up the stairs this morning with a dead gull in her mouth and sat down on the second landing as if she owned the place, which, since your father went out on the Halvard, I suppose she does. I have stopped shooing her. The lamp room is warm where her tail lies across the iron grating, and the oil man says the bulb has not gone dark once since she took to sleeping beside it.
Mr Pryce from the harbour office came out in the boat on Tuesday to say the Board wants the light automated by spring. He looked at Mags for a long while, the way men look at a thing they have already decided to sell. I told him the light has been kept by our family for forty years and by a cat for the last six weeks, and he laughed and said cats were the one thing the Board could not count.
Last night the fog came in thick as wet wool and I climbed the tower with the paraffin, though my knees complained at every step. Mags was already on the gallery rail, sitting upright with her back to the glass and her tail curled round her feet, facing the sea as if she were the one watching for a boat. I lit the wick. The beam swung out over the water and I heard, very faint, a horn answer from the west.
I have decided to write to the Board and tell them the light is in good hands. Come home at Easter if you can. Bring nothing but yourself. Mags will want to meet you properly.
Love, Mum
