Abstract grey shape and orange splash on forearm

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A loose, abstract tattoo on the forearm shows an irregular shape outlined in sketchy black lines and filled with soft grey shading. Thin strokes and ink drips extend across the skin, and a small patch of orange sits to the right of the main form. The blurred dark background keeps the focus on the arm and the design.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The glass had gone cloudy through the winter gales, and by March the lantern room looked like a jar of dishwater. Dad said it could wait for the spring tides. I climbed the one hundred and twelve steps anyway, with a bucket of vinegar, a rag and a torch clamped in my teeth, because the Marigold was out past the Carrack and her skipper had a daughter who waited on the quay every evening.

Inside, the air was thick with salt and old paraffin. I wiped the panes in long grey arcs, the way you'd smudge charcoal across a page, until the Atlantic showed through in pieces. Below, the sea moved like ink poured slowly into water, dark at the rim and pale where the spray broke. I could just make out the orange buoy the lifeboat men had laid at the bar, a small bright bruise on all that grey.

When I lit the mantle, the light came up gold and then spilled out over the water, and for a moment the whole room looked like the inside of a struck match. I stood with my palms flat against the warm brass until I heard the engine. Far out, a single lamp swung left, then right, then steadied, and I knew the Marigold had found the channel.

Dad found me at dawn asleep on the floor with the rag still in my fist. He didn't ask why I'd come up. He lifted the lid of the oil can, peered in, and said the wick would want trimming before the next tide. I told him I knew.
