Jagged line band on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A forearm photographed against a black background shows a single band of thin black linework wrapping around the arm. The jagged lines form overlapping zigzag peaks that step across the skin, with some lines doubling back on themselves. The image is black and grey with even, soft lighting that shows the skin texture and clean edges of the tattoo.

The needle scratched its ink onto the smoked paper in a steady grey hum, a line like the tops of hills seen from the road home, and she knew every bump of it the way she knew the stairs in her cottage. At ten past three on a wet Tuesday the line stood up and kept standing, peak after peak, until the mug on the sill crept a half inch towards the edge.

The quarry at the back of the village had been blasting since Easter. Mr Pryce from the council had told the parish it was nothing to worry about, and the vicar had said the same over Sunday tea, so Nell wrote the times in her ledger and telephoned nobody. She had her own notion of what the earth did when it was being opened up. It complained in stripes, the way a hand complains through a bandage.
By dawn the paper was a long band of black teeth, overlapping, doubling back on itself where the shock had rebounded off the far side of the valley. She cut the strip free with the good scissors and carried it to the window. Outside, the real ridge sat black against the greying sky, and the peaks on the paper lay exactly where the hills did.
The drum had not invented anything. It had only been waiting for something to shake it hard enough to say so.
