Mind the gate, it sticks in the frost, and sit where the stove can reach you. Right. You want the story of the rope, the one your great-grandad knotted in the back end of the year when the beasts were coming down off the top field and the snow had already got into the lane. Now listen, because I'll only tell it the once before the kettle goes.

Hal Brandreth had a length of tarred baler twine and a daft notion that a family was like that twine: you could cut it, you could leave it out in the rain, but if you ran it round the posts often enough it came back to where it started. So he tied a figure of eight around the two oak posts at the bottom gate, then ran the twine through it and back again, lap after lap, until the knot was one line with no start and no end. His wife Maud thought him soft. The ewes thought nothing at all.

The winter the lane flooded, the eldest boy went over the ridge for the doctor and didn't come back by dark. Maud walked the twine every hour with a lantern, one hand on the wire, following the loops round and round the posts, because it was the only way she knew the path would not end at the ditch. Near dawn she found him sitting in the hollow, cold but breathing, one hand still closed on a strand.

That's the whole of it. The gate's still there, and the twine's still there under the ivy, if you care to go and look. Don't go on the ridge without a line in your hand. Now pass me that cup, and mind, the story's not finished till the cup is empty.
