Accio Adventure lettering on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white close-up of the words ACCIO ADVENTURE in bold, upright block capitals, with ACCIO set above ADVENTURE and centred. The lettering has solid, even black lines with clean edges, and the soft grey background keeps focus on the text. The tattoo sits on the forearm, and the image shows no colour ink.

The gatehouse of Harrowgate Keep had lost its roof before my grandmother was born, so the rain came in sideways and pooled on the flagstones where the great hall used to be. I had hauled my father's brass theodolite up the scree in a canvas bag, and in my pocket was a scrap of paper from the surveyor in Carlisle who had died in March. It said only: the spring is under the chapel, follow the drain.

The chapel was a roofless ring of arches with ivy knotted through the windows. I found the drain by its smell, sweet and iron, and by a lintel where someone had cut letters into the stone long ago, the edges gone soft as soap. I could not read the whole of it. Only one line stood out, square capitals in the old masons' style, blunt and pale against the grey: ACCIO. Beneath it, a second word had worn down to a shadow.
I said the first word aloud, feeling foolish, the way you say a prayer you do not believe. Nothing happened except a crow lifting off the wall. Then the drain gurgled, a bead of water rose slowly over the lip of the stone, and from somewhere far below came a rattle of chain. My father's measuring chain, which I had left coiled at the foot of the hill, came up the path through the bracken and wrapped itself twice around my ankle like an old dog that had found its way home.
I laughed until I cried, then filled the sample bottle from the spring and started down before the light went. From the gate I looked back once. The word was still cut into the lintel, and the water was still rising, and behind me the chain kept rattling after me down the scree.
