Mountain peaks and adventure script on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A thin black outline of three mountain peaks sits above the word adventure, written in a lowercase handwritten script with a full stop at the end. The linework is even and fine, with no shading, and the ink is a single dark tone. The tattoo is centred on the forearm against a plain skin background, with a maroon knit sleeve and a blurred wall of stickers behind.

The rope has frayed to a whisker by the time the barge clears Hollin Lock, and you are the one sent out along the gunwale with a spike and a roll of tarred twine. Your uncle Dai steers without looking back. He has been working this hull down the Severn since before you were born, and he has opinions about every bend of it, none of them printable.

Under the tiller cover, folded into the almanac, is the page your mother tore from a school jotter the winter she left. Three peaks in biro, a line for the ridge, and a word underneath in her slanting hand: adventure, with a full stop, as if she had dared the word to argue. She never got further than Shrewsbury. You have always thought she drew it as a map of somewhere she meant to go, not a place she had already been.
By dusk the barge noses into the bank below Caersws and the water goes quiet enough to hear the hills settling. Dai hands you the lantern and says the old hands used to read the high ground against the sky to judge the weather. You look up. Three shapes stand black against the last of the light, sharp as the lines on that page, and the bank is slick under your boots.
You tie off in a bowline that holds, the way he taught you, and climb the slope with the lantern swinging. At the top the whole valley opens like a sheet of paper. You take the biro from your pocket, the only sensible thing you have brought, and write today's date beneath her word, and then you add a full stop of your own.
