The body is filled with orange and a darker reddish-brown, and the neck is dark, against a plain skin tone and a pale background.

Her uncle Ray said it belonged to a lad called Tomasz who had slept in the barn one summer and played in the evenings, badly and beautifully, while the Gala apples came down. He had left in a hurry the week of the storms, owing two weeks' wages and a crate of Conference pears. Nell carried the instrument up the ladder to the top field, where the Bramleys hung heavy and the light lay amber across the grass. She played until the sun touched the hedge, one song she half remembered and then invented the rest of. A van horn sounded on the lane below, and she did not look up. Ray came to the gate with his cap in his hands and said the lad had sent a postcard from Lisbon asking whether his guitar was still there. Nell lifted the instrument from her knee and held it out across the gate. "Tell him it's been kept in tune," she said, and walked back down through the trees with the windfalls splitting under her boots.
