Heart and music note on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small outlined heart sits beside a single musical note, both drawn in thin black linework on the inside of a forearm. The skin is lit with a warm, slightly faded filter, and a guitar neck and body appear behind the arm against a red and white backdrop. The tattoo is the clear focus, placed low on the frame with plenty of empty skin around it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The guitar maker of Hollin Vale had one rule for the people who came to his workshop: play me the note you carry, and I will tune the wood to it. Most arrived with grand ideas about scales and sweeping chords, and most left without a guitar. Mared Stennet came on a wet Tuesday with flour still under her nails and asked for nothing grand at all.

She rolled up her sleeve and showed him the ink. A small outlined heart sat beside a single black note, drawn by the tinker's boy the winter her sister Ilse drowned at the weir. "That is what I carry," she said. "I cannot sing it any more. My throat has forgotten it. Can you?" The maker looked at the drawing for a long time, then reached for a block of pale spruce and began to cut.

It took him nine weeks. He fitted the soundboard with a stiff brace, strung it with gut, and sat with his ear against the body, turning a peg by the width of a hair until the note rose out of the wood. When he finally struck it, the sound was thin and plain, the way a voice is when it is only remembering. Mared pressed her forehead to the neck and wept without making a sound.

She paid him in sacks of barley and carried the guitar home on her back. Each evening after that, the valley heard one note drift up from her cottage at dusk, the same note, over and over, until the ink on her arm had faded to grey and the weir ran quiet. Nobody in Hollin Vale ever asked her to play anything else.
