Adult wolf with three wolf pups on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A large adult wolf head sits at the top of the design, with three wolf pups arranged beneath and around it, one with its tongue out. The fur is rendered with soft, detailed shading and fine hair strokes, with the adult in grey and black and the pups in warm tan and brown tones. The design fills the frame against plain skin and a pale green wall.

Gerry had worked the night desk at St Brannock's for nineteen years, and he still took his tea standing up, as if the chair might be needed. It was gone three. I was logging obs on Bay Four with the corridor lights turned down to amber, and he leaned on the sluice door beside me and looked at the wall clock as though it owed him money.

"The night shift's a pack," he said. "Old one at the front, young ones in the middle, and somebody always at the back making sure nobody drops off." He nodded down the ward toward the side room where the Pemberton lad was sleeping, his mum folded into the armchair beside the bed. "She's been awake since Tuesday. Won't eat, won't go home. Just keeps her head up like she's listening for something."

I offered to take the back door for an hour so she could sleep. Gerry shook his head. "No, love. You sit with the lad. She'll sleep when she sees you've got him." He was right, the way he usually was about people. When I went in, the monitor blinked its steady green and the boy's hand hung off the mattress with the fingers curled. I sat on the stool and pulled the blanket up over both of them.

At six the light came grey through the blinds. The boy woke first, saw me, and stuck his tongue out as far as it would go. His mother laughed in her sleep, the first sound I'd heard from her all week, and Gerry put two teas on the desk without a word, one of them still standing up.
