Wolf head and moon on a forearm

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A grey wolf head faces forward with amber eyes, drawn in fine black linework and soft grey shading. Behind it, a large pale yellow moon is framed by a loose purple arc, with blue and violet splashes and drips running down below the muzzle. The photo is taken close up on the forearm against a dark red wall, with a white shirt sleeve at the edge of the frame.

The roof went first, so the moon has been the only lamp in the great hall for as long as you have kept the place. Each evening you climb the broken stair with a cold pie and a jug of cider, and each evening the grey wolf is already waiting in the nave, its back to the altar, watching you with eyes the colour of old honey.

The village below calls the place Harrowgate and calls the wolf the Warden's dog, though nobody has seen it chase a single sheep. The steward swore it would take your hand off at the wrist. You have only ever found it patient. When sleet drives through the arrow slits it shifts to make room by the cold hearth, and you learn to sit with your shoulder against its warm ribs while the sky goes the colour of a bruise.

One night in late autumn the moon is so full it bleeds through the cloud, and the wolf rises and walks to the breached wall. It stops at the gap where purple ivy hangs like a torn banner and looks back once. You follow. Beyond the gap the valley lies silver, the river running blue beneath the moon, and the village lights are out, every one of them, as if the whole county had agreed to sleep. The wolf lifts its head and howls, and the sound is answered from the hills.

You stand there until your breath steams and the cider goes cold in its jug. Then you walk back up the stair alone, because some doors in a ruin open for one night only, and the wolf knows which ones. In the morning a single grey hair lies on the gallery step, bright as a coin, and you pick it up and hold it to the light for a long time.
