Adventure Awaits shield with campfire scene

Traditional · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A shield-shaped tattoo shows a crescent moon and four stars above pine trees and a tent, with a campfire at the lower left. A white banner across the middle reads ADVENTURE AWAITS in dark outline lettering. The linework is bold and clean, with soft grey and blue-grey shading across the sky and ground, and the design fills the frame centrally.

The jack had slipped twice before Wren gave up on it and sat down on the warm tarmac to wait for the stars. The road ran dead straight through the desert, and the only sign for miles was a number and a town forty miles off. Her brother had always been the one who could coax a fire out of anything. She had the matches he'd left in the glovebox, half a tin of beans, and a pocketknife with a loose blade.

Dusk came fast. She dragged scrub brush from the verge, stacked it into a pyramid the way Dad had taught them at the lake, and struck the first match on her boot. The flame caught on the second try. Within minutes a small orange tongue was chewing the dead branches, and the cold came up out of the sand the moment the sun let go.

Above her the sky opened in a way she had forgotten cities could hide. A thin crescent hung low over the ridge, and then the stars came, first the bright ones, then the faint ones filling in between like someone sketching in the gaps. Somewhere past the dunes a car passed, its headlights sweeping the mesas and leaving them dark again.

She ate the beans cold from the tin with the pocketknife, and when the fire had burned down to a glow she lay back on the bonnet and counted the stars until one of them, she was sure, began to move. A truck crested the rise, slowed, and flashed its lights twice. Wren raised the torch. The driver leaned out of the cab. "You got a tent?" he called. "No," she said, laughing, "but I've got a fire."
