Mountain landscape in a diamond on the chest
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A diamond-shaped frame holds a night landscape of layered mountain ridgelines, a crescent moon and a scatter of stars. Pine trees fill the bottom point of the diamond, with the darkest shading along the lower edges. The tattoo is rendered in black ink only, using fine single-line contours for the mountains and stippled dots for the sky and the shadowed trees.

The cartographer's daughter had drawn the valley wrong, and everyone in Sallow Hollow knew it. She had put the river on the wrong side of the pines, and the old mill where the river should have been stood instead on the ridge. Her father said maps were only promises, and a promise could be kept late. So when the autumn fires came over the eastern hills, the village looked at her map and laughed, and then stopped laughing, because the fire had come down exactly where her lines said the water would be.

They went up the ridge in the dark with buckets and wet sacking, the way the map told them. Behind the mill the ground fell away into a bowl of stone, and the stone was cold to the touch, which no one could explain. Over the ridgeline the mountains stood in long grey steps, each one thinner than the last, and above them a crescent moon hung low enough to snag on the peaks. Thin pale stars were scattered across the sky like the seed of something that hadn't decided to grow.
She found the spring under a stand of pines at the bottom of the bowl, just where she had drawn it, a dark pool the size of a cartwheel. They fought the fire to the edge of the trees and no further. In the morning the villagers came back and found the pines scorched black at their tips and green at their roots, and nobody argued with the map after that. The cartographer's daughter kept a fresh copy pinned above her bed, and on the bottom point of it she drew the pines again, very small, and shaded them so dark the nib caught.
