Adventure lettering with mountains and arrow
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
The design spells out ADVENTURE in hand-drawn block letters, with each letter built from a different motif. The A is replaced by a solid black mountain range, the D by a bow with an arrow, the T by a pine tree and the U by an acorn. The linework is thin and even, and the solid black mountains provide the only area of heavy fill. The image is black ink on a white background with no colour.

The lift on the east side had been out since Tuesday, so I took the stairs at a quarter past two with a flask under one arm and the drug chart under the other. Ward Six keeps its lights low after midnight, and the corridor smelt of hand gel and toast from the staff room.

Bed four belonged to Tomasz, who was nine and had been with us eleven days, long enough to have opinions about the food and the ceiling tiles. He was awake, as he always was, with a library book face down on his chest. 'The lift is broken,' I told him. 'So I climbed Everest.' He frowned, not sure whether I was joking, which is the right response to most things I say at night. The play specialist had left a paper map on his wall, a hand-drawn range of peaks with an arrow pointing north and the words BASE CAMP written in purple felt tip. He wanted to know which peak was the hardest.
I couldn't answer that, so I took him to the window instead. Beyond the car park, under the sodium lamp, stood the one pine tree the grounds staff never cut back. He pressed his nose to the glass and said it looked like a lookout post. Then he dug in his dressing gown pocket and produced an acorn with a cap still stuck to it, brought in by his gran on Sunday. 'Can it grow on the sill?' he asked. I found a yoghurt pot, filled it with water and promised nothing.
At six, when the tea had gone cold and the day staff were arriving with their coats still zipped, I checked the pot. Something pale had split the acorn open, no taller than a pencil. Tomasz was asleep with the library book open on the blanket, and beside his hand, in careful felt tip, he had drawn a bow, an arrow and a small green tree.
