Black line drawing of a jagged mountain range with several peaks on a plain white background, shown as a tattoo design.

Mountain range line design

Black and grey · Flash

The image shows a single continuous black outline forming a row of mountain peaks, with the tallest summit near the centre. The line varies in thickness, thickening in places and tapering to sharp points at the ends. The plain white background leaves the drawing isolated with no shading or colour.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Hannah, the ridge we kept calling the Sleeper finally gave up its name on the survey sheet this morning, though Mr Okonedo spelled it wrong and I have not had the heart to correct him. We reached the col before noon, the mules refusing the last scree like proper Yorkshire donkeys, and from there the whole range lay out in one long broken line, peak after peak, the middle one standing a head taller than its neighbours as if it had been asked to stand for a photograph. I sketched it three times because the first two looked like a child's drawing of teeth. The third looks like a line that has been pulled taut and allowed to snap back at the ends, which is more or less what the ground does here.

The stream below the col runs a colour I can only describe as weak tea in a silver cup. Okonedo thinks it carries iron. I think it carries the grief of every surveyor who ever walked up here with a theodolite and a bad cough, but I keep that to myself, since he is the one who will have to write the report.

We lose the light by five now, so I am writing this by the stove with the sheet pinned beside me. Tomorrow we descend the western face and I expect the rain will start the moment we leave the shelter of the rock. Do not worry about the sketch. I have traced the outline onto oiled paper and will carry it in my breast pocket, folded twice, so that when I am home and you ask me what the mountains looked like I can show you a line that remembers every peak we crossed.
