Mab Corrigan had worked the narrowboat Patience for thirty years before she set her mind on the sky. Every evening the big silver aeroplanes came down low over the water meadows at Hillingdon, their lights blinking, and every evening she stopped her tiller and watched them go over. Her husband Tom said they were only machines full of people who wanted their dinners. Mab said nobody who was going somewhere looked that tired.

Her sister Ada lived in a terraced house on the far side of the airport, with a garden full of lupins and a view of the runway. Ada had written three letters that spring asking Mab to come and stop a while. Mab kept them under the tea caddy. Each time she read them she thought about how the canal turned back on itself near the old lock, and how she would never again find the lock keeper's gate in the dark.

One still morning in June a little plane came over lower than the rest and dipped its wing, the way the pilots did for children waving from the towpath. Mab waved anyway. Tom looked up from the gunwale and saw her shoulders shake.

"Go on, then," he said. "Take the bus. I'll keep the boat."

She went. Ada opened the door before she knocked and said nothing, only led her through to the kitchen where the kettle had already boiled. Mab sat down in a strange chair and looked out at the planes sliding over the rooftops, and for the first time in years she could not think of a single thing she wanted to be on the other side of.
