Small airplane tattoo on wrist
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small, solid black silhouette of an airplane sits on the palm side of the wrist. The shape has clean edges and uniform dark ink with no shading. The tattoo is in black ink on light skin, with another hand resting above it and leather bracelets on the forearm below it against a blurred wooden floor.

Dear Nell,

The apron at Carrow Fields was empty again this morning, so I had time to sort the lost-property drawer, and that's where I found the job card with the drawing on it. You'll remember Tommy Gell, the lad from the Dewsbury side who came to us in March with a packet of Woodbines and no idea what a torque wrench was for. He'd sketched a little aeroplane on the back of the card in biro, nose pointing left, wings flat and sure, the way you'd draw one if you'd only ever seen them from underneath.
I asked him about it on Thursday. He went red and said his dad used to build them from balsa in the back kitchen, and the first one he ever launched went straight into the coal bunker. He'd been trying to get the wings right ever since.
Then yesterday the cloud came down over the runway and the Rapide was stuck in Glasgow, so we sat in the crew room with the kettle going. Tommy pulled a requisition form towards him and drew the same shape again, small enough to hide under a thumb. He said it was for luck. I told him luck was a thing you did with spanners, but I didn't take the pen off him.
This morning the sky cleared and the first machine rolled out onto the stand, and Tommy stood at the fence with his hand up against the glare, the ink smudged but the wings still plain. I don't know if he'll make a good engineer. I do know he'll never forget the shape of the thing he wanted to fly.
Love, Joe
