Black silhouettes of Peter Pan characters and stars forming an infinity symbol with the words Never Grow Up, tattooed on the ribs.

Peter Pan silhouettes in an infinity symbol

Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink tattoo of an infinity symbol contains solid silhouettes of a fairy, a flying boy and a small figure, with scattered stars and the words Never Grow Up in script. The silhouettes are filled solid black with no shading, and a dotted trail of stars follows the loop of the infinity sign. The tattoo is shown in black ink only on bare skin, with a blue fabric edge visible at the top left.

Mind the step, the lot of you, these flags are older than my knees. Sit down. Nobody leaves before the cake is cut, and that rule is older than the chapel.

My Aunt Ada kept a cottage above the harbour at Robin Hood's Bay and never once in eighty years let a clock into it. She said a clock on the wall tells a child how big he's getting, and a child who knows that will go and do it. So when the March wind came off the water, she'd sit us by the range and tell the one about the boy who flew out of a nursery window and never came back down. He chased stars across the sky and looped them round in a great figure eight, back and back, the way a ribbon goes when you fold it over on itself. A fairy no bigger than a teaspoon rode on his shoulder and sulked whenever he forgot her name.

When I was nine and cross about a loose tooth, Ada told me the loop has no end, which is why it lies on its side. You can walk it forever and never reach the start. I asked her what happened when the boy finally got tired. She laughed until she coughed and said, 'Then he'd have to grow up, and where's the fun in that?' Then she took my hand and we walked the sands to the rock pools, counting gulls, and she was still counting them at ninety.

So raise your glasses to Hannah and Tom, who've found the loop between them and are going round it still. Never grow up, the pair of you. Keep one foot off the ground and one eye on the stars. And if the cake's dry, blame the Pelhams.
