Airplane outline on the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A single outlined aeroplane sits on the side of the ribcage, drawn in thin, even black linework with no shading. The skin is photographed in a mirror selfie, with a phone in the upper right and a dark draped top across the frame. The image is in colour, but the tattoo itself is simple black ink on a neutral skin tone.

You reach the market at seven, when the rain has turned the cobbles to mirrors and the stallholders are still dragging tarpaulins over their trestles. Dennis, who sells bootlaces and cracked Bakelite radios, is already swearing at a gull on his awning. He hands you a mug of tea without asking how you take it, and that tells you he has been waiting.

The envelope is inside his coat, folded twice and soft at the corners. Inside is a sheet of tracing paper with a single aeroplane on it, drawn in one unbroken line, the pen never lifted. "Your mother's idea," he says. "She said you'd want it finished before you left, not after." You turn it to the grey light. The tail fin meets the fuselage at a point so exact it looks measured, and the wings run out to the edge of the paper without a tremor.

She never coloured them in. You remember her at the kitchen table with a ruler and a biro, telling you that a plane is only ever the shape of the space it leaves behind. You used to think that was the kind of thing grown-ups said to end a conversation. Now you hold the paper over the bin where the rain is drumming on the lid, and you fold it once, then again, until the outline is a small hard wing in your palm.

Dennis watches you do it and says nothing. Then you tip the paper into the gutter, where the water takes it, turning it slowly towards the drain with the line still showing through the wet.
