AK-style rifles across four fingers
Realism · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A clenched fist shows four separate rifle tattoos, one across each finger from the first knuckle to the middle joint, with the stocks and magazines visible. The linework is fine and the rifles are shaded with soft grey gradients and dark highlights to give them volume. The image is in black and grey, with the background and skin tones kept neutral.

Week forty-one of the spring clearance, and Mother Ansel tells me to stop calling the trunk a find. Four rifles, pressed flat in an oilcloth roll, their stocks gone grey and soft as bread crust. Ansel says the old people wore them like rings, one to a finger, so a fist could be a wall or a warning depending on who was looking. I write weights in the ledger and nothing else. Four rifles, nine hundredweight of rust in total, to go to the smelter.

The smelter boy, Tobin, is sixteen and wants to keep one. He sets the first barrel on the anvil and sights down it through the window, where the orchard starts. Bent, he says, though it isn't. Ansel takes the iron from him and tells him the metal has already been asked to do one job, and that is enough for any iron. We melt them down into hinges for the new granary doors, which will open and close a thousand times a day without anybody wondering what they used to be.
That night I sit with the ledger and draw what I remember of the trunk, four short strokes across the margin like knuckles along a rail. Tobin finds the sketch in the morning and asks what it counts. I tell him it counts the things we did not need. He copies the lines in chalk onto the granary door plate, then rubs out three of them with his sleeve, leaving the last one standing where the hinge pin will go.
