The last coach out of Halder Wells had left without you, so you were sitting on the kerb by the petrol pumps when the girl came across the forecourt with her hand closed tight. Dust was still settling on the bonnets. She opened her fingers under the sodium light and showed you a pink disc no bigger than a biscuit, its gold rim rubbed bright at one edge, a five-pointed star sitting inside it like a sheriff's badge. She wanted to know if you knew the track to the old observatory. You didn't, not really, but you had a van, a full tank and nowhere to be before morning.

The road out was ninety kilometres of corrugations that rattled your teeth. She sat with the emblem on her knee and named the signs around its edge for you, one planet at a time, the way a shopkeeper knows which tin is on which shelf. The crescent in the middle was the one that mattered. She had found the thing in a creek bed scoured to bare clay after the storm, as if someone had set it down to collect later.
At the cattle grid the headlights swung across a line of dead mulga and lit the pink face so it glowed like a paper lantern. She pressed it flat against the dashboard. The three stones caught the light red, blue and yellow, and for a moment the whole van smelled of rain on hot iron, though it hadn't rained in months. You cut the engine. Neither of you reached for the door.
When you finally drove on, the observatory dome was a pale tooth on the ridge, and she was gone from the seat before you reached the gate. The emblem was still on the dash, its star pointing back down the track toward the creek. You kept it. Nobody came back for it, and some mornings the sun hits it just right and it looks like it's waiting.
