Celtic triquetra knot in a circle on an ankle
Geometric · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A single black outlined Celtic triquetra knot, three interlocking loops, sits inside a thin circle on the side of the ankle and lower leg. The linework is clean and even with a little solid shading in the overlaps, and the ink is uniform black on pale skin. The tattoo is centred on a plain background of tiled wall and skin, with a woven bracelet with green and white beads at the bottom of the frame.

Dear Tom, the lamp has been out since Tuesday. The man from the board says the bulb is sound, so it must be the wiring, or the gulls, or the old fool at the top of the stairs who will not stop polishing the lens. I have told you before that the circle on the lintel was not my idea. Your grandfather cut it there with a cold chisel the winter the Mary Ellen went onto the Scarrow, and the three loops inside it were meant to keep the light turning, or so he said.

This morning I climbed up with a rag and a tin of brass polish and traced the knot with my thumb. It does not start anywhere. You cannot find the end of it, which I suppose was the point. Each loop goes under the next and over the one after, and the sea comes in against the rock twelve feet below as if it had been invited. Mrs Pascoe came out on the boat with the post and asked if I was keeping well. I said I was keeping the light, which is the same thing up here.
The bulb came on again at dusk without anyone touching it. I stood at the rail and watched the beam sweep over the water, and I counted the flashes the way your grandfather taught us, three short and a long, and found I had lost my place by the second hour. So I have stopped counting. I have stopped watching the boat too.
Come home when the weather turns, or don't. The circle will still be on the stone long after both of us, since it never had a beginning to worry about. Yours, Ada.
