Ariel and Flounder on an upper arm

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows Ariel with red hair and a purple shell top, seated on a rock beside a pink flower. Flounder the yellow and blue fish sits in the lower part of the design, with Sebastian the red crab partly visible at the left edge. The shading is smooth and painterly, with teal and green water, bubbles and seaweed filling the background, and colour ink dominates throughout.

Dear Nadia,

I nearly skipped the reunion. Then Mr Haskins's email arrived with the subject line "Dinner Hall, Bring Your Shame", which is what we used to shout at him across the lunch queue, and I thought, well, somebody has to go and tell the truth about the chips.

Do you remember Lorraine Pugh's exercise books? She drew the same mermaid on every one: red hair running off the edge of the page, a crab with its claws up near the margin, and a fat yellow fish with the face of a worried uncle. Mrs Ashdown confiscated three of them in Year Nine, and I'm told she spent the whole of her lunch break in the staffroom trying to work out how the fish stayed in the water.

Lorraine was there, at the table by the fire door, with a ring binder she kept opening and shutting like a clam. When I asked what was inside, she turned it round. Same mermaid, older hand, the colours finally right, teal sea sloshing up the page. She said the crab had been Sebastian the whole time, and that nobody had ever once asked her who the crab was.

I laughed so hard the caterer thought I was choking. Then I bought her a lemonade and asked her to draw the fish for my nephew, and she did it on a beer mat, scowling as ever. It's stuck to my fridge now. Come up in March and we'll find out what else you've been lying about.

Love, Jo
