Alice in Wonderland scene on the ribs
Ribs · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows Alice in her blue dress standing among glowing pumpkins, with the pink Cheshire Cat in a top hat beside a castle and a bare tree under a large yellow moon. A bottle labelled DRINK ME sits at the lower left, and a swirling shape rises from the upper area. The linework is bold and the shading is soft, with grey tones in the background and bright greens, blues, pinks and yellows in the foreground.

Dear Nell, the pumpkins came up wrong this year, every one of them glowing from inside like a lantern somebody forgot to blow out. Dad says it's the wet summer and the chalk, but I think the wood has taken to them. You know where the bracken stops at the edge of Hollin Wood and the old track begins? Mrs Pryce's ginger cat has been sitting on that gatepost every evening, grinning at nothing, and she swears it's the same cat that followed her home from Ashby market in 1961.

Last Tuesday I went after the bottle. Under the hawthorn I found a little brown glass thing with a paper label tied round its neck, DRINK ME, in Grandmother's handwriting, and I thought, well, she always did leave her rubbish in the strangest places. I didn't drink it. I'm not daft. I held it up to the moon instead, and the moon was enormous, and behind it the old house on the ridge had every window lit, though nobody has lived there since the Hallams went bankrupt.
Then the cat came down off the gatepost, sat beside me on the track and told me, very politely, that the pumpkins were not for eating. I have been thinking about that all week. I've decided the cat is right, and I've decided to plant more.
Come home at Michaelmas and bring the good kettle. Bring your fiddle too, if you can stand the walk through the bracken, because I want to see whether the wood will dance. Your loving sister, Bea.
