Alien head on the lower abdomen

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A small alien head is tattooed on the side of the lower abdomen, drawn as a black outline with two solid black almond-shaped eyes. The linework is even and clean, with no shading, and the design sits in the centre of the frame. The skin tone is warm, with soft lighting and a slightly blurred background.

Nobody crosses at Dover at quarter to four in the morning for pleasure, so I had my tea poured and my biro out when the coach from Calais pulled up short of the barrier. The driver, a woman called Marisol with a laminated rota taped to her dashboard, said one of her passengers wanted to see a senior officer. He carried a fold of brown paper under one arm and would not hand it over until I promised to look at it under the lamp.

Inside was a sheet of tracing paper, pencilled in a careful hand, and on it a single head: a round outline, two solid almond eyes drawn over and over until the line went dark and even. Beneath it he had written a name, a date from 1987, and the word CLEARED, underlined twice. My father kept a drawing like that on the inside of his toolbox lid for thirty years. I never asked where it came from.

I asked him what needed clearing. He said the paper had already crossed one border, in a different sense, and nobody at the other end had believed it was a document at all. I told him documents were what I dealt in. He smiled and said that was exactly what the drawing had predicted.

I stamped the sheet with the date, stamped the coach manifest, and let them through. Later, when the lorries had cleared and the lamps buzzed, I found the paper tucked into my own logbook beside the day's entries, the eyes pencilled a shade darker than before. I left it there. Some things a border only needs to see once.
