Arrow and dreamcatcher on the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A side view of a torso shows a small black arrow running horizontally across the ribs, with a circular dreamcatcher-style motif at its centre and wispy feather lines trailing behind it. The linework is fine and the circle and arrowhead are solid black. The pale skin sits against a white wall covered with flash drawings of skulls, roses and mandalas.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The goose feathers had gone stiff in the crate by the time Maud Fenwick decided the arrow would fly north, whatever the wind did. Her father had made bows in the back room of the chandler's shop for thirty years, and he had never once let anyone shoot from the yard. "A bow is a promise," he used to say, "and a promise is only as good as the hand that keeps it." She took down the ash shaft with the brass nock anyway and fitted three feathers, each cut to the same slant.

The arrow would not fly straight, and everyone on Holm Lane knew it. But the kite string had snapped the week before, and the kite had gone over the marsh with the Pettigrew boy's name painted on its tail. He had been crying at the quay since dusk. Maud walked him out to the sea wall, tied a ring of rowan and copper wire to the arrow's tip, and strung the ring with a length of sinew from the gutting hook.

She loosed it into the grey. The feathers streamed behind the shaft like the pale wake of a gull, and the ring spun, catching the last of the light, until the wind dropped and the arrow came down in the reeds a hundred yards off. Nobody spoke. Then the boy ran barefoot along the wall and, at the edge of the marsh, found the kite snagged on the sinew, its painted name still legible through the mud.

Maud went back to her father's bench and oiled the bowstring. She cut three new feathers and left the old ones in the reeds, where the boy would find them on his way home.
