Penguin in an oval on the stomach

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A small penguin stands upright in the centre of a thin black oval outline. The linework is clean and even, with solid black fill on the bird and no shading. The tattoo is shown in close view on bare skin above the waistband of jeans, with a hand holding the denim at the edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The penguin had been standing by the petrol pump outside Coyote Wells for three hours, upright and unbothered, as if someone had posted it there with a clipboard. You pulled in because the fuel gauge insisted, and the attendant, a man called Dell with a sunburnt neck, nodded at it like a regular.

'Hitched in from the coast,' Dell said. 'Lost its oval.' You asked what that meant. He pointed at the forecourt, where a faint ring of pale grit marked a circle on the concrete, neat as a chalk outline. 'Stays inside its ring, mostly. Doesn't care for the heat, so it sulks in the shade.'

You should have left it there. Instead you drove the penguin ninety miles to Sand Hollow, where a cracked ring of earth waited under a water tower. It hopped off the passenger seat, walked three careful paces and turned to look at you with one small black eye. Then it settled exactly where the pale line ran through the dust, and the line flared white in the sun, and it was simply a bird again, sitting in a circle that had been its all along.

On the drive back the radio gave nothing but static, and the passenger seat stayed empty, still faintly dusted with grit. In the mirror the water tower shrank to a dot, and for a moment you could have sworn the road behind you was marked with a thin pale oval, waiting for the next thing that needed a place to stand.
