Alien head on the side ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A simple alien head is tattooed on the side of the torso, with a single thin black outline, solid black almond-shaped eyes and a small curved smile. The linework is even and the design is solid black with no shading. The skin is pale and the tattoo sits against a black bra strap and a white top, with faint printed text visible in the background.

The signal came in at twenty past two on a Tuesday, between the shipping forecast and the hiss. Dougie Pask had the night watch at Hollin Point, and he was the sort of man who wrote everything down in pencil, so he wrote it down: three short tones, then a long one, then nothing. I came up the cliff path with a flask because he rang the bell box and said, "Bring your reading glasses, Marnie, and not the bad ones."

The thing on the dish was small, about the size of a dinner plate, and it had been sitting in the gorse since dusk. It was grey-green and shaped like a teardrop turned upside down. It had two black eyes, almond-shaped and sorrowful, and a small curved line for a mouth that Dougie insisted was smug. Nobody had told it that the lighthouse beam was for ships and not for it.

We argued about protocol for an hour. Dougie wanted to log it as a fault in the aerial. I wanted to ring the coastguard. In the end we did neither, because it lifted its head at the gulls, squinted at the sweep of the light, and then, very slowly, tapped the rim of Dougie's flask with one thin finger until he poured it a cup of tea.

It stayed until the sun came up, drinking from the thermos lid and asking nothing. When the coastguard finally rang back, Dougie said there was nothing to report. I wrote in the log: visitor, polite, no further transmissions. Then I went home and slept with the window open, just in case it wanted to come back and tell us where it had been.
