Small outline Saturn on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small black outline of a ringed planet, resembling Saturn, sits on the inner wrist of a pale forearm. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ring passes across the front of the planet. The black and white composition is set against a grey background and a dark chequered sleeve.

The lens came back from Leeds with a hairline crack running from rim to centre, and Dad sat on the back step holding it up to the light as though it had let him down personally. Ada took it off him and turned it over. Three months of saving had gone into that disc of glass, and now it was fit for nothing but the rag drawer.

The Fenside Astronomical Society met on Thursdays in the Co-op hall, squeezed between the bread van and the bingo, and that week everyone talked about the satellite the Russians had sent up. Mr Venn said it would cross the parish on Friday. Ada sat at the end of a trestle table with the back of a rent book and drew Saturn from the library's encyclopaedia, because she wanted to see how the ring sat. In the picture it crossed the front of the planet, not the back, so she drew it that way, one thin stroke pulled tight through the middle.

On Friday the sky over the drainage dyke was clear as a bell. They set up the spare eyepiece, the small reserve lens with its chipped brass rim, and Dad bent to the tube and was quiet for a long time. Ada waited. "Go on," he said at last, and she looked. A pale smudge, then a blur, then the ring, a faint line of light so thin it seemed it might be a scratch on the glass.

"It's edge-on tonight," Dad said. "You only see it when it's thin." She thought about that all the way home along the dyke, the torch bobbing ahead of her, and when she got in she smoothed the rent book flat on the kitchen table and drew the planet again, ring across the front, and under it wrote the date and the word still.
