Ada Pell found the fruit at the bottom of the carter's crate, wrapped in newspaper gone soft with frost, and nobody on Hollin Farm had ever seen its like. The carter swore it grew on trees in a country where the sun did not leave the sky. Her father said that was a lie, then weighed the thing in his palm and said nothing for a long while.

That January the beasts were kept in the barn and the wind came off the tops like a blade. Ada took the fruit to the kitchen table and cut it slowly, because she was afraid of wasting any of it. Inside one half sat a brown stone as hard as a hen's egg. The other half was pale as candle wax and held its shape around nothing at all. She set the two halves side by side on the scrubbed board and looked at them until the lamp guttered.

Her mother came down in her shawl and said the stone should be planted, since anything with a stone in it was meant to grow. So they pressed it into a clay pot by the range, watered it with snow melted in the kettle, and waited. Nothing came up that winter. In March the pale half went soft and was thrown to the hens. Ada kept the stone on the windowsill, and when the thaw came she found it split along a seam, with a green shoot working its way out of the crack, as if it had only ever wanted the other half to be the ground it stood in.
