Geometric · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A solid black tattoo of a stylised crescent-shaped symbol with a horizontal bar running through its centre and a small point at the middle. The lines are bold and fully filled with black ink, with no shading or grey tones. The tattoo sits on the side of an ankle against a pale plain background, with the shot framed close around the leg.

Dear Margaret, you needn't ask whether the lamp is still turning. It is, and the glass was polished again this morning, though Harold swears the salt gets into the brass faster than I can wipe it. The new moon came in on Tuesday and for three nights the sky over Skerrick Holm has been black as a coal scuttle, which the fishermen call good weather and I call a long watch.

Last night, just before the tide turned, I walked the lower path to check the fog bell and saw something out on the reef. A thin curl of pale foam had caught against the rocks, with a broken spar pushing through it at a slant, the way a gull's wing cuts across a sky. Between the two the water lay still and black, and the whole shape looked like a new moon that had been split by a bar of driftwood. I stood there longer than I should have, Margaret, because it was the only thing on that reef that looked deliberate.

I wrote it into the log in ink, not pencil, drawn bold and filled in so the next man can't mistake it. Under it I put the bearing and the hour, and the word wreck, though I'm not certain it is one. The relief boat comes on Friday. If the sea stays quiet, I'll show Captain Doyle the page myself and we'll row out to see what the tide has left for us. Keep the kettle warm.

Your brother, Edwin
