All of time and space lettering on a shoulder
Lettering · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows the words All of time and space tattooed in a single line across a pale skin area near the shoulder. The letters use a serif typewriter-style face in solid black ink, with clean, even strokes and little shading. The plain cream wall and dark top behind the skin keep the focus on the lettering.

Mrs Ivy Pargeter had typed four hundred dispatch notes for the Halifax rope works without a single error, which is why Mr Sowerby noticed the one she made on purpose. The sheet went through the machine with a capital A where the carbon wanted a full stop, and he came down the typing room with his pencil already lifted, the way he did when he meant to find fault.

"Retype it, Mrs Pargeter. Carbon copies are carbon copies."
She didn't. She took a clean sheet from the drawer, wound it in with two turns of the platen, and typed the letter she had been composing since March, when the Ardent sailed without a word from her brother Harold. Dear Harold, the reading room has a map of the world pinned under glass, and I have stood over it on my dinner hour looking for you. The ink has faded off the Pacific. All of time and space is a great deal of ground to cover, so I have started at the postmark and worked backwards.
Mr Sowerby read the dispatch note, then the letter she had slipped beneath it, and said nothing for so long that the typewriters around them slowed and stopped. At last he set the pencil behind his ear. "Second post goes at half past four," he said, and went back to his desk.
She licked the stamp and pressed it flat with her thumb, the way you would close a door on a room you fully intended to come back to.
