Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of an inner wrist with the words "All Was Well" in black handwritten script, enclosed in quotation marks, with three small dots arranged like stars above the lettering. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black on pale skin. A silver round locket engraved with a triangle and circle symbol sits on the wrist at the lower right, against a dark fabric background.

At the Gorrow Pass the snow came down so fast that the carriers roped themselves together and sang to keep each other moving. Old Tamsin Reeve kept the toll hut there for thirty winters, and she knew the sound of a man lost on the road, a thin humming like a kettle left on the back of a stove.

One night in February a boy came up from the eastern side with no coat and a silver disc on a cord round his neck. It was the size of a biscuit tin lid, cold as river stone, engraved with a triangle inside a ring and a single upright line through the middle. He could not say where he had come from. He only kept saying the same three words, over and over, as if they were a bolt he was trying to find in the dark. Tamsin asked what they meant. He said his grandmother had taught them to him for when things went wrong.
She sat him by the stove and put her spare shawl round his shoulders. The pass had one rule, she told him: nobody crossed in the dark without a light, and the only lamps the old carriers trusted were the stars. Three of them hung low over the ridge that night, close enough to count, and she pointed them out through the window. "All was well," he said, and she understood it was not a question.
In the morning the snow had stopped. The boy was gone, and the disc lay on the table where he had left it, still warm as if someone had only just set it down. Tamsin hung it on the nail beside the door. After that, whenever a traveller came up from the east, she told them to look for three stars before setting out and to say the words under their breath. Most of them made it over. The rest, she said, had only forgotten the order.
