Miles to go and paper plane on wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows the words miles to go in neat, thin black lettering, with a dashed line curving up from the text to a small outlined paper plane. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the ink appears dark blue-black against the skin. The wrist fills the foreground against a wooden background, and a metal paper plane pendant on a chain hangs across the hand.

Dear Ruben,

Your plane came down on the balcony of flat 14 this morning, nose-first in the pot of dead geraniums, and I took that as a sign you have not forgotten how to aim. Mrs Okonedo from the twelfth floor sends her regards and says the bin men still take the long way round by the Co-op, so you were right about that too. The lift has been out since Tuesday, which means I have been climbing with the shopping like a mountain goat, and I am no goat.
I have kept the folded sheets you left in the drawer. There are eleven of them, each with a line of your handwriting along one wing. The one from the night before you went to Leeds says miles to go, and under it, in pencil, you drew that dashed line curling up to a plane that never quite landed. I used to think you meant the bus route. Now I think you meant the whole distance, the bit nobody can fold for you.
So here is my news, which is small. I got the job at the library on Saturdays. Thursdays the plants on the stairwell are still mine to water. Yesterday I climbed to the roof with a fresh sheet and threw one out over the car park, and it caught the wind above the bins and went further than anything you ever managed, out past the football pitch and the chimney. I watched it until it was a speck, then I went back down the stairs, counting, and I did not stop until the bottom.
Write back soon, and tell me where the planes land in Leeds. Your loving aunt, Pat.
