Fine line geometric tattoo of an arrow, curls and dotted lines ending in a small blue eye, on the inner wrist of a raised hand.

Geometric arrow and eye on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A raised hand with pink painted nails shows a small fine line tattoo on the inner wrist. The design combines a central arrow-like line with curled scrolls, a dotted triangle, dotted circles and a small almond-shaped eye at the lower end. The linework is thin and mostly dark blue-purple, with a small blue accent in the eye, set against a plain pale grey background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Margit had spent nineteen winters walking the dotted line the old surveyors drew across the frozen river, and not once had the stones agreed with the map. She carried the brass theodolite in its felt-lined case over the ice at first light, because the guard at the crossing swore the low sun made the lenses lie. Nobody in the valley trusted the squat marker at the bend, a stone post with an almond-shaped eye cut into its face and a blue glass bead set in the pupil.

That morning the bead was gone. Someone had prised it out in the night and left a neat ring of pale grit on the ledge. Margit knelt, set the tripod over the nearest scratched circle in the snow, and sighted along the arrow-line the surveyors had pencilled through three villages. The arrow pointed not at the far bank but at the single birch on the hill above the customs house, whose trunk had been split by lightning in her first year and had never fallen.

She drew the triangle the way her father had taught her, three points and a dotted base, and every corner landed on a stone she had never noticed. Each one bore a small curl cut into its face, like a fern unrolling. On the last stone she found the bead, pressed into the frost and still faintly blue, as though it had been set there for someone who would know to look.

She pocketed it, closed the case, and walked back to the customs house without filing her report. The line on the map, she decided, had never been a border at all. It was a set of instructions, and somebody had finally started following them.
