Dad script and red heart on wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A small tattoo on the inner wrist shows the word Dad in black cursive script, with a thin red outline of a heart rising above the letters. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the black and red ink sit clearly against the pale skin. A grey floral bracelet and a sparkly bangle sit at the edge of the frame on a dark wooden surface.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Nell Ashworth was nine when the last survey drone fell into the sea off Halden Reach, and after that the only writing left on the island was what people kept on their skin or scratched into the lids of tins. Her grandmother said the old word was a sound you made to a man who came home late from the boats. Nell did not believe her until the ferry brought the box of paper.

Inside the box was a grey book with a split spine, and in it a page of looping letters copied by someone with nothing better to write with. The word was Dad. Above it, in red ink gone thin at one edge, someone had drawn a heart. Nell carried the book to the ferry-keeper, old Tobiah Crane, and asked him what it meant. He turned the page over, looked at the blank side for a long time, and said it was a promise written small enough to fit a wrist.
She practised on a slate all winter, until the letters stopped leaning into the wind. In spring she copied the page onto her own wrist with a thorn dipped in crushed blackberry, and the heart came out crooked, rising too high on the left. She rubbed at it with her sleeve and it only spread. Her grandmother saw it at supper, went very still, and then took Nell's hand and turned the wrist to the lamp. The heart in the book had been drawn by the same crooked hand. It had always been her grandmother's.
