Neo-trad style flash design of a coffin framing a cracked red heart, green lightning bolts and a white banner reading ALL WE LOVE WE LEAVE BEHIND, with red drips along the base.

All we love, we leave behind coffin flash

Neo-trad · Colour · Flash

A coffin-shaped flash design with a central red heart split by a black crack, surrounded by symmetrical black, red and green motifs and green lightning bolts. Two white banners across the middle carry the words ALL WE LOVE and WE LEAVE BEHIND, and red drips run down from the lower edge. The bold black outlines, grey tonal bands and speckled background give it a printed sticker look.

Walter Pyle had left a tin on the bench under the clock, the sort he used to keep signal keys in, and inside it sat a red heart wrapped in brown paper. Someone had stitched a black crack through it with heavy thread. Taped to the lid was a single ticket for a journey to Scarborough, dated the morning his wife went out for milk and never came back up the hill.

I rang the number printed on the back of the ticket from the stationmaster's phone. A woman answered on the fourth ring, sounding as though she had waited forty years for the call and had decided not to pick up. 'Keep it,' she said. 'He always said the heart was the only thing worth carrying on the late train.'

I put the tin inside my coat. Behind me a torn timetable flapped against the wall, its last line still legible, and the first northbound pulled out with its green lamps burning. I stood on the empty platform until the rails went quiet, holding the one thing he had loved and never managed to take with him.
